The KEYT News Video Archive (FMST Mss 6) is a collection of more than 2,500 of U-matic videotapes created by Santa Barbara's local television station KEYT (channel 3) and consists primarily of footage used in KEYT's local newscasts and news magazine type programming. This digital collection contains a portion of materials from the collection which were recently digitized. The "Air Checks" (1982-1985) series consists of entire newscasts as they were originally broadcast for viewers in the Santa Barbara area and are organized by their broadcast date. Each of these recordings typically contains two 30-minute newscasts which include local, regional, and national news stories, commercials and advertisements, and public service announcements. The "Local Archive" (1985-1994), "Santa Maria Daily News Footage" (1994-1995) series consist of individual stories or other recorded footage which were archived for the station's library. Each tape contains many stories recorded over a period of time. The news magazine program "101" (1985-1991), features stories about topics and events relevant to local audiences, and the public affairs program "KEY Issues" (1985-1986), features panelists and engaging in conversation around local and regional issues and topics such as local politics and crime
The UCSB Library is currently digitizing and describing materials in this collection so that they are more widely discoverable and accessible. Because material is primarily described by date within this collection, to find specific coverage of an event from 1985-1994, researchers may also consult scanned logbooks from the station which include brief, 1-2-word descriptions of footage contained on the tapes. These logbooks provide important information for locating content within the including dates, tape numbers, and timecodes. Researchers may also consult the finding aid on the Online Archive of California for additional information on the collection and materials that have not yet been digitized.
Materials that have already been digitized are most easily viewed within this digital collection platform. If an item has not yet been digitized, you can request that a copy be made through your Special Collections Research Account. Digital access copies or "screeners" to be used for educational use and research may be requested through your Special Collections Research Account. Requests for preservation copies for publication or other commercial use must be requested through your Special Collections Research Account. UCSB Library does not own copyright to this material nor does it license or provide permission to publish content from the collection. All requests to license footage must be sent to KEYT's General Manager and approval provided prior to receiving preservation copies. For more information on the collection or assistance in using the materials, please contact the Santa Barbara and Local History Collections Curator.
